Eggington in the slips

At Eggington, park with consideration in the main street near to ‘The Horseshoes’ pub. Walk along the main street, with the pub on the right and ‘Manor Farm’ on the left. Take the right fork at the T-junction – this is the road to Stanbridge. Take the first footpath on the left, next to Eggington Cricket Club.

Cross a large gate and proceed straight ahead: the path is clearly visible. Cross three stiles followed by a plank bridge into a field, keeping to the left hand boundary of the field. Cross a metal gate, again staying close to the left hand boundary, and then cross over a wooden stile. Continue over the next wooden stile, bearing diagonally right across the field towards some caravans and portakabins and Hill Farm.

Eggington is so very English  with a delightful pub (including free range chickens which roam everywhere), an excellent cricket club and even a red telephone box!

Just before a metal gate, on the left, is a small ladder-stile near a large tree. Cross and turn right, following the hedge to cross another stile. Turn left down the track, called Woodcock Lane, and follow it past some bungalows and farm buildings on the right. Continue down the lane towards Hockliffe, visible in the distance. Turn left at the end of the lane and walk with care along the Leighton-Hockliffe road (A4012).

Hockliffe Church End is a pretty quiet hamlet - the seat under the apple tree makes an ideal resting place.

Take the first turning on the right signed ‘Church End’. Continue along this pleasant country lane and take the first footpath on the left by the large white house called ‘Church Farm’. (Hockliffe Church End is very pretty – the seat on the green makes an ideal resting place.)

Go up the steps and over the stile, between the church and the farm. Head to the left-hand corner of the field and cross the stile to the left of the metal gate ahead (note the excellent views here). Cross the field, go through the metal gate in the hedge and then head for the telegraph pole in the centre of the field.  Bear to the left, staying to the right of the farm (Old Stock Farm), and cross the platform in the dip, which is not visible until you are very close to it. Cross the stile and the wooden footbridge over the stream. Cross another stile near to the farm garden and turn right and head diagonally across the field. Head for a gap in the hedge in the far corner. Go through the gap, turn left and climb over the fence. Head diagonally across the next field towards the road (the road can be heard but not seen from this point).

Cross straight over the busy Leighton Road to the metal gate opposite and follow the clear track ahead (access permission has been granted by the owner). At the end of track, prior to the metal gate, turn right through the gap in the hedge. Proceed ahead, with the hedge on the left, through two fields. On reaching the road, turn left and at the fork in the road bear right, back into the centre of Eggington.
